Ah, the eternal question: To buy or not to buy a MacBook Pro 2019 in the futuristic world of 2024? Spoiler alert: You totally should, and I’m here to tell you why. I mean, sure, it’s like half a decade old, but hey, vintage is in, right? I’ve owned Mac products now for the last decade. The first Macbook I purchased was the 16 inch model with the CD drive back in 2012. They don’t make that anymore. I still have it and it still works. Now, it might take forever and move like a dinosaur, but it still works. Additionally, I purchased my Macbook Pro (Intel i5) that I have now in 2020. It’s been 4 years since I’ve had it and its still going strong.

Realistically, however, the M2 lines beat the previous generation Intel models on performance. But, if this is not some super high requirement workhorse, then you should be just fine with a MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel) model. I’ll get into why in a second.

What is the history of the MacBook Pro?

The MacBook Pro has undergone a fascinating evolution since its introduction in 2006. Initially lauded for its sleek design and powerful performance, it set a new standard for professional-grade laptops. Over the years, Apple has continually innovated, introducing features like the Retina Display for unparalleled screen resolution, the Touch Bar for enhanced functionality, and increasingly powerful processors. The design has evolved too, becoming thinner and lighter with each iteration, while boosting performance and battery life. Apple’s shift to its own M1 and M2 chips marked a significant leap, offering remarkable speed and efficiency improvements. This evolution reflects Apple’s commitment to marrying aesthetics with power, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a laptop.

I was there up until 2016 to witness most of this evolution. Fascinating as it was, I must say that these newer models are very sleek and performant compared to some of the older models. The 2019 Intel Macbook Pro is the introduction to the line that we have today, with the dark, muted colors, and the sleek lightweight craftsmanship.

What are the technical specs of the MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel i5)?

Okay, nerds, let’s dive into the specs. This beauty might not have quantum processors, but it’s got enough juice to run your 20 Chrome tabs, plus Spotify. And let’s be real, that’s all we really do anyway. On most major performance metrics, the M-line of Macbooks outperform the Intel Macbooks. Surprisingly, it gets scored higher for gaming. Also, it definitely gets scored higher for value for money. I’ll explain more below.

What is the cost of a MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel i5)?

Let’s talk about money. In 2024, you could buy a new MacBook for the price of a small island, or get this gem without breaking the bank. Plus, think of all the avocado toast you can buy with the savings. I don’t know about you but I love me some avocado toast. Anything to expand the AVT budget is a good deal.

Sadly, Apple doesn’t sell the 13 Inch Macbook Pro 2019 (Intel, i5) model anymore. However, you can still find the laptop at a variety of retailers, as well as on used marketplaces. On average, you can find a new MacBook Pro 2019 for $572 on Amazon. Today, a new MacBook Pro (M-line) starts at $1599.

How is the user experience of the MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel i5)?

The user experience is great. What more can I say? Everything works, it gets the job done, and I like how it feels when I use it. Its intuitive and familiar and simple. I don’t use my laptop for much beyond the basics and I love Macs because they are built to last, and, for the most part you know what you’re going to get with a Macbook.

How durable is the MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel i5)?

This MacBook has seen more than your average reality TV star. It’s been through finals week, Netflix binges, and yes, even that phase when you thought you’d be a DJ. It’s the little engine that could of laptops. As a matter of fact, I spent many of hours DJing on my old Macbook Pro 15 inch (CDrom)

The MacBook Pro is renowned for its durability, a trait that’s a hallmark of Apple’s design philosophy. Crafted with a sturdy aluminum chassis, it’s built to withstand the rigors of daily use while maintaining a sleek and lightweight profile. Users often commend its resilience to everyday wear and tear, with many reporting that their MacBook Pro remains reliable and functional for several years.

The keyboard and trackpad are designed to endure countless keystrokes and interactions, and the Retina display is not only visually stunning but also robust. Additionally, the internal components are engineered to perform over the long term, maintaining efficiency and speed. While no device is impervious to damage, the MacBook Pro’s build quality is frequently highlighted as a key factor in its longevity and enduring user satisfaction.

With all that being said, I highly recommend you get yourself a nice case while you’re at it.

How does Apple handle climate change and sustainability?

Buying a 2019 model in 2024 is basically like rescuing a puppy. You’re saving it from a life of loneliness and giving it a loving home. Plus, you’re being green – and not just with envy of the latest models.

Apple has been increasingly vocal and proactive about its commitment to environmental sustainability. The company has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint, aiming to become carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. This includes using renewable energy sources for its offices, stores, and data centers. Apple also emphasizes the use of recycled materials in its products and packaging, striving to minimize waste and conserve resources. Additionally, Apple has implemented programs for recycling its devices and has been working on reducing harmful substances in its products. Their environmental policies reflect a broader corporate responsibility goal, balancing technological innovation with ecological mindfulness.

What are the Pros and Cons?

Pros: It’s a MacBook. It’s got a glowing apple on it. Need I say more? Its works just as well as the newest models and its almost half the price.

Cons: It doesn’t come with a time machine to take you back to 2019. Yet. Also, for really software intensive workloads that require high performance, the M-line of macbooks is the best choice. Also, the cost is a con depending on your budget.

What decision should you make?

So, you’re on the fence. Maybe you’re thinking, “But what if a newer model can teleport me to Starbucks?” Here’s where I lay it down: This MacBook is like the perfect pair of vintage jeans – it just fits right. It’s great for most laptop use cases. It’s modern. It’s budget friendly, and it gets the job done.

In conclusion, the MacBook Pro 2019 is like the comfort food of laptops in 2024. It’s familiar, reliable, and won’t ask you to take out a second mortgage. So go ahead, make the smart (and stylish) choice.

Before I had an iPhone 13 Pro, I had an iPhone 7 for many many years. Apple products are built to last.

Best, TJ

  1. Cogent advice there! Thank you. Think i might go for a 2019 MB Pro actually!
By the way, the 2019 MBP doesn’t feature a glowing logo (as you’ve mentioned in the Pros and Cons section). Apple eliminated that feature in 2015, due to its structural cons, and other design considerations.
