X is under investigation by the European Commission for allegedly breaking laws on disinformation, illegal content and transparency, and deceptive design practices. The charges are being justified via the new Digital Services Act. The formal filings were launched after X failed to comply with evidence of eliminating hate speech and racism from X platforms operating in the EU.
The Digital Services Act, which was conceived in August, can levy fines up to 6% of a company’s global income or ban them from operating across the EU if they are found to have broken the law.
Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner enacting the DSA on X, confirmed the proceedings in a post on X from his Twitter profile. (See image below).
More to come as the story develops! These are steep fines, should X be found guilt of the charges. Subscribe to stay in touch with us and get the latest news delivered straight to your inbox!
